Tiburon City Overview
North of the Golden Gate Bridge, north of Sausalito, the Tiburon peninsula juts southeast into San Francisco Bay. On the tree-covered peninsula is a town by the same name where houses that cost in the millions – with great views in every direction – dot the hills and the coastline.
Tiburon is a suburb of San Francisco, which can be reached in 40 minutes by car or 30 minutes by ferry, and one of the richest towns in the United States.
Tiburon is the Spanish word for shark but it’s not known exactly why it was named that. It may be because there are a lot of native leopard sharks in the surrounding waters or it could be because the peninsula itself is shaped like a shark. Belvedere, a smaller town, is located on the southwest end of the peninsula.
Although Tiburon is mostly residential, the Estuary and Ocean Science Center, San Francisco State University’s marine and estuarine research facility, is situated on 34 acres of bayfront property. Also located there is the Bay Conference Center where meetings, retreats and conferences are held. Ferries shuttle people to San Francisco or Angel Island, a state park where visitors can bike, hike, lay on the beach, picnic and explore.
The famous wine regions of Sonoma and Napa valleys are an easy drive, a half hour to Sonoma and an hour to Napa. But, Tiburon is a destination in itself. On Friday nights in the spring and summer, Main Street is blocked off for a street party with music and drinks and lots of food.
The population of Tiburon, which is 4.4 square miles of land and 13.2 square miles of water, is about 9,200. The median household income is $155,000 and the median price of homes is $2.4 million.
Perhaps the most famous resident of Tiburon was Robin Williams (1951-2014), who was born in Chicago but moved there with his family when he was 16 and then moved back several years before his death. He is remembered as being kind, generous and funny, an active member of the community who would often be seen around town. In 2015, the Waldo Tunnel on a road that links Tiburon to San Francisco was renamed the Robin Williams Tunnel in his honor.
