Piedmont, California, a tiny 1.8-square-mile city, sits in the middle of Oakland like a donut hole.
The wealthy, residential enclave, a suburb of both Oakland and San Francisco, is a hilly, tightly packed neighborhood of homes with a median value of $2.3 million. It’s walkable – and bikeable – as long as steep hills are not a problem for you. Many of the houses have at least a partial view of the bay.
It is one of the richest towns in the United States, a description it has been familiar with for 100 years. In the Roaring ’20s, according to its history, Piedmont was known as the “City of Millionaires” because it had more millionaires per square mile than any other city in the country.
The story of Piedmont (which means “foothill” in Italian) is an interesting one. Its borders make little sense. They don’t follow streets and even cut right through some houses. That’s because they were hastily drawn using sewer lines when the city was fighting a land grab by Oakland in the early 20th century. Oakland, which was about 170 blocks when it incorporated in the late 19th century wanted to become the largest city on the Pacific Coast by absorbing smaller towns around it. But Piedmont wasn’t having it. It fought the annexation and remains a residential, upscale city unto itself in Alameda County.
Piedmont, which is located in the Oakland Hills, overlooking San Francisco Bay, got its name in 1877 from James Gamble, the president of Western Union. He bought 350 acres, built a house and then put the rest of the land up for sale through his “Piedmont Land Company,” a good name for the city at the foot of the mountains.
The population of Piedmont is 11,000. The median household income in Piedmont is $212,000. Piedmont is three miles east of downtown Oakland; five miles southeast of Berkeley; 13 miles east of San Francisco and 13 miles north of Oakland Airport.
Piedmont has no restaurants but many are located in neighboring Oakland shopping districts.
Famous people who have lived in Piedmont include Clint Eastwood, Charles Schwab, Steph Curry, Reggie Jackson, and Jack London.

Save on Your Piedmont Private Charter Flights
These days, over 30% of private jet charters are flying empty either to get into the position for the next booked flight or to return to their home base. These flights are known as empty legs and are one-way private jet flights without any payload or passengers on board.
It often happens that such an empty-leg flight has been paid for in part by the original flyer and is therefore offered at reduced rates. Empty legs offer price advantages with cost savings of up to 75% when compared to standard private jet travel rates.
At any given time, there may be more than 3,000 empty legs available worldwide. Once you let us know about your preferred routes and dates, we can match your air charter schedule with empty-leg charter flights available on the market.
Using multiple platforms, Paramount Business Jets offers the most comprehensive empty-leg flight search on the market.
