The Marin County town of Mill Valley is nestled in the foothills of the redwood forests of Mount Tamalpais near the coastal flats of Richardson Bay and the northern edge of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area.

Its compact, little downtown area is surrounded by expensive homes built into the surrounding slopes and state, federal, and county parklands. Several box canyons, dense forests and sea fog keep the temperature relatively cool. In the summer, the average high is 65 degrees. Winter highs average around 55 degrees.

When you walk down the streets of this funky-chic town with a European feel, it’s hard to believe you are only about 15 minutes north of San Francisco. The artistic community draws people to its art galleries, fine restaurants, coffee shops, boutique shopping, and recreational areas.

The 4.8-square-mile town of 14,000 is consistently found on “Best Cities” and “Most Expensive Cities” in the U.S. lists.

Smithsonian Magazine which named Mill Valley one of America’s most interesting small towns in 2012, credits its history as a haven for beat poets and hippies for giving it the reputation of “putting mellow on the map.”

Muir Woods is one of Mill Valley’s most magnificent attractions. It’s a fantasyland where giant redwoods, the oldest of which is 1,200 years old, tower overhead. Muir Woods is a federally protected National Monument. Three paved loops allow visitors to drive around but there are also many adjacent trails that lead to the top of Mount Tamalpais. A rocky beach is on the coast.

Residents, with a median household income of $106,000, pay for the town’s beauty as well as the proximity to San Francisco. The median home value is $1.6 million. The only things for sale under $500,000 are empty lots, some in need of egress.

Mill Valley is also renowned for its local comedy and theater. For more than 40 years, the California Film Institute has hosted the world-class 11-day Mill Valley Film Festival, which is held in the fall.

Among the famous people who were born or lived in Mill Valley are Eve Arden (born there 1908), Robin Williams, Jerry Garcia, Sammy Hagar, Janis Joplin, Huey Lewis, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Weir, and John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
