Private Jet to Old Greenwich

Old Greenwich is the wealthiest of the swanky New York City suburbs in Fairfield County, Connecticut.

Located on the northwest side of Long Island Sound, Old Greenwich, a summer beach resort called “South Beach” in the 1800s, has many properties with beautiful views of the water. And, in some spots -- including Greenwich Point Park (Tod’s Point) on the tip of the peninsula that juts into Long Island Sound -- it has views of the New York City skyline. The 147-acre park is also the location of the best beaches in Old Greenwich.

It has long attracted wealthy New Yorkers who want to escape Manhattan and yet be less than an hour train ride away. New England-style seaside houses with large front porches on large lots on narrow winding roads make the town of about 6,600 feel comfy instead of pretentious. But just because residents don’t flaunt their money doesn’t mean they don’t have it. It’s among the Top 10 wealthiest towns in the U.S. with a median home price of $1.3 million and a median household income of almost $200,000. Even a modest home is $700,000. And, its residents are well-educated. Some 80 percent of them have a bachelor’s degree or higher compared to 31 percent for the nation as a whole. So, go ahead and call Old Greenwich snobbish; its residents are likely to agree, especially those living on the grander and more expensive side of town, south of Route 1.

The town has a small downtown area with the Old Greenwich Rail Station at its center. Build in 1894, it's on the National Register of Historic Places. There is also a block-long strip of boutiques. It’s hard to believe that in the 1950s, it was an industrial town. Electrolux had a vacuum manufacturing plant there.

Today, aside from the gated communities along with the sound where celebrities like Diana Ross have mansions, Old Greenwich has a community feel, thanks in part, to its many gathering spots. There is something for everyone. The Old Greenwich Yacht Club, which was established in 1943, welcomes all members. There are also tennis and sailing clubs. The private Innis Arden Golf Club has an 18-hole course, pool, and tennis courts.
