Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos owes its being to the 2004 Summer Olympic Games.

When Athens was awarded the 2004 Summer Olympics, returning the modern Olympic Games to the place in which they were first held in 1896, the city promised to have a new airport ready to handle the estimated half million extra visitors that would be coming to the games. Many of those extra visitors would be coming on general aviation flights, including those chartering a private jet into Athens International Airport.

The city kept its promise. Athens International Airport opened in 2001, replacing the 60-year-old Ellinikon (also known as Hellinikon) International Airport. The old airport has been repurposed as exhibition centers and other facilities.

Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is located about 20 miles southeast of the center of Athens and about 220 miles east of Olympia where the ancient Olympic Games were first held in 776 BC.

About Athens International Airport

The largest of about 40 airports in Greece took five years and about $2.5 billion dollars to build. It opened in 2001, three years before Athens was to hold the 2004 Olympic Games.

Athens International Airport, which is known locally as Eleftherios Venizelos, has about 65 takeoffs and landings an hour.

The award-winning airport, a favorite of travelers, was designed to be expanded to eventually handle 50 million travelers a year. It can now handle more than 15 million travelers a year.

The Greek Islands

Athens International Airport is the perfect starting point for elite private jet travelers who want to go the largest collection of islands in the world, the Greek Islands.

While there are about 6,000 islands located in the Aegean and Ionian seas, only about 220 are inhabited.

They are all beautiful but the island chain considered the playground of millionaires and billionaires is the Cyclades, a group of 56 islands that are located southeast of the mainland in the Aegean Sea.

Mikonos and Santorini are perhaps the most famous and both have airports that can accommodate rented private jets from ATH.

The crescent-shaped Santorini is actually a small group of five islands – and an active volcano, underneath the sea. But, don’t worry. The last eruption was about 3,600 years ago.

The southernmost island in the Cyclades, Santorini, was formed by volcanic eruptions over thousands of years. Its airport is Santorini Thira Airport (JTR).

Mykonos, known for its parties, beautiful beaches and 16th-century windmills, is about 100 miles from Athens and can be reached by private jet in about 30 minutes. Charter jet brokers like Paramount Business jets can arrange for you to rent a private jet from ATH to the Mykonos Airport (JMK).

Mykonos was a virtually unknown paradise until 1961, when First Lady Jackie Kennedy visited and put it on the map. Celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Marlon Brando followed, starting off the wave of wealthy movie stars that vacation on the island.

And, its popularity keeps on growing. The ultra-rich A-listers who used to go to islands like Ibiza and Saint Tropez to party now go to Mykonos. Those lucky enough to have a yacht docked in Mykonos – such as Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana – can party on the island all night and sleep on the boat all day.

If you want to go celebrity-hunting, visit during July and August. That’s when the 33 square mile island gets packed with elite travelers staying in expensive hotels, shopping in hip boutiques, eating in swanky restaurants or hanging out on the beautiful white sand beaches.

Among the other islands in the Cyclades that have small airports are Astypalaia (JTY), Milos (MLO), Naxos (JNX), Paros (PAS), and Syros (JSY). It’s easy to rent a private jet at Athens International Airport to get to any of these islands and many others that have a place to land but no real airport.

Athens Boat Show

This annual international event that features something for everyone who loves the water, from surfers to owners of mega-yachts, takes place every November in the Olympic Fencing Center.

The Athens Boat Show is for everyone who loves marine recreation and tourism, professionally or just for their own enjoyment.

The Athens Boat Show is the top annual maritime event in Greece, attracting thousands of enthusiasts from all over the world.

Ouzo and art

Lesvos, the third largest of the Greek Islands after Crete and Evia, is known as the ouzo capital of Greece.

The anise-flavored liqueur ouzo is the national drink of Greece and most ouzo is made in a Plomari, a seaside town on the island of Lesvos, which is also called Lesbos.

And, there is a surprise on the island (not brought on by the effects of drinking too much ouzo) – the Teriade Museum, which is located in an olive grove, and has in its collection works by Chagall, Matisse, Miro and Picasso. Stratis Eleftheriadis, an artist that was born in Lesvos, donated the collection to the museum.

Here’s a tip for visitors: if you are looking for something to eat with your ouzo, try the local salted sardines and Ladotyri cheese, a delicious cheese preserved in olive oil.
