NHL All-Star History

The game is traditionally held near the mid-point of the hockey season but that wasn’t always the case. In fact, the first game, played in October 1947, wasn’t even all All-Stars. The defending Stanley Cup winner played the best players from the league's other teams. The Stanley Cup matchup ended – replaced by two teams of all-stars -- in 1968.

The format and opponents of the All-Star Game was changed several times in its history. Sometimes they played all-stars from other countries.

The most recent format-change came in 2015 when the one-game format -- pitting one team against another -- was expanded to allow for an elimination round.

Each of the league's four divisions will field a team and they face off for the final. In the first round, the Atlantic Division All-Stars play the Metropolitan Division All-Stars and the Central Division All-Stars play the Pacific Division All-Stars.

The winners of these games then meet in the All-Star Game Final. All games are 20 minutes.

Fans vote online for the captains of the four divisions. Then, the NHL Hockey Operations Department selects the other 10 players so that each team has six forwards, three defensemen and two goalies.

The first game under the new format was held Jan. 31, 2016, at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. The Atlantic Division defeated the Metropolitan Division 4-3; the Pacific Division beat the Central Division, 9-6.

In the final, Pacific beat Atlantic, 1-0, to become the All-Star champions.

Hockey Trivia

  • Hockey fan Neil Young, the 70-year-old singer-songwriter, comes by his love of the game naturally. When he was growing up in Canada, his father, Scott, a sportswriter for the Globe and Mail in Toronto, wrote several books on hockey.
  • Fellow Canadian Mike Myers, who was born in 1963 in the Scarborough district of Toronto, named two characters -- General Borschevsky and Commander Gilmour -- in his first Austin Powers movie after Maple Leafs players, Nikolai Borschevsky and Doug Gilmour.
  • Twice, in 1979 and 1987, the All-Star game was replaced with games pitting the NHL All-Stars against teams from the Soviet Union. In 1979 (the three-game Challenge Cup), the Soviets won, 2-1. In 1987 (the two-game Rendezvous ’87), was a split decision with each country winning one.
  • Fans vote online to select the captains of four divisions. The player with the most votes in his division wins.
  • The NHL Hockey Operations Dept. selects the remaining 40: six forwards, three defensemen and two goalies per team, for a total of 44 All-Stars. There are 11 players on each team. The division representatives in the Western (Central and Pacific) and Eastern (Atlantic and Metropolitan) conferences play, then the winners face off for the championship.
  • More than a decade before the first official All-Star game, the NHL gathered a team of its best players for a benefit for player Irvine “Ace” Bailey, whose career was cut short by massive injuries suffered while playing.
  • The All-Star Game is not held in years in which NHL players compete in the Olympics. The game was cancelled in 2006, 2010 and 2014.
