About the Show

More than 700,000 car aficionados converge on the Geneva Palexpo, a convention center located next to the Geneva Cointrin International Airport, every year to see things like a $2.4 million Lamborghini supercar made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini.

The 10-day International Geneva Motor Show, which is the European counterpart of the North American International Auto Show, is important for the entire worldwide auto industry. There are meetings and forums for all segments of car manufacturing.

Who goes to the Swiss motor show? According to a survey taken for the show organizers:

• There are more foreign (59 percent) than Swiss (41 percent) visitors to the show.
• They are mostly young with 51 percent under the age of 35.
• They are mostly (79 percent) male.
• Some 10,000 of them are journalists from all over the world, there primarily to cover the Car of the Year award ceremony.

Hundreds of exhibitors, including all the large manufacturers, have their cars and products on display in more than 1 million sq. ft. of exhibition space (about 20 football fields).

If you can’t decide on which days to go, here’s a tip from the show sponsors: Since the weekend days are traditionally the most crowded, a visit during the week is strongly advised, if possible.

Car of the Year

One of the show’s highlights is naming the winner of Car of the Year. The prestigious award is highly sought after by car manufacturers. It is voted on by a jury of journalists – the 2016 panel consisted of 58 journalists from 22 European countries -- and the trophy presented at the beginning of the show.

The winner is chosen based on the car’s design, innovation, quality and value. To give you an idea of the kinds of cars that are considered for the award, the finalists in 2016 were the:

History

The first Swiss Motor Show was held in 1905. There were 59 exhibitors and 17,000 visitors to the show. It was held on and off until it gained worldwide recognition in the 1930s. It is now held annually, a move that show sponsors credit to its success because the other major European car shows such as the Frankfurt International Motor Show, the Paris Motor Show or Tokyo’s Motor Show are held every two years. The attendance mark broke 700,000 in 2000.

There are few cities with more beautiful views of the Alps than the Swiss city of Geneva. Located at the southern tip of Lake Geneva near the French border, the global diplomacy and banking hub has much to see.

You can:

• See the city or go fishing on a cruise on Lake Geneva.
• Check out the headquarters of the United Nations.
• A bus and a cable car will get you to the top of Mont-Saleve and its breathtaking views.
• Go bohemian in Carouge, the Greenwich Village of Geneva located not far from the city’s center. Alleys and passageways wind through Carouge, which is filled with shops, bars and antique dealers.
• Visit the famous Broken Chair sculpture in the Place des Nations. The 5.5-ton, 40-foot-tall, three-legged work of art was made in 1997 by Daniel Berset in remembrance of the victims of landmines and to urge governments to promote bans on landmines.
