Zanzibar City Overview
Zanzibar is situated the Indian Ocean, about 25 miles off the east coast of Tanzania. Zanzibar is the archipelago consisting of two large islands Unguja (commonly referred as Zanzibar) and Pemba Island, and about 50 smaller surrounding islands. Zanzibar is about 60 miles long and 20 miles wide. Also known as the "Spice Island", Zanzibar characterized by white sandy beaches with coral reefs, warm clear blue waters, idyllic surroundings, ancient Islamic ruins, historic monuments, excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities, fantastic deep sea fishing and water sports activities. Zanzibar's capital, Stone Town is the old center and cultural center of the island, with the narrow streets and winding alleys, bazaars and mosques, colonial mansions and exotic shops. Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to many historical buildings and ruins dating back from the 19th century that reflect a blend of Portuguese East Indian Persian and Omani Arab architecture. Main attractions in Zanzibar include the Old Dispensary, Livingstone's House, the Peace Memorial Museum, the Palace Museum, the Arab Fort, the House of Wonders, and the Anglican Cathedral Church of Christ. On the east coast of Zanzibar is the Persian Kidichi Baths and many superb beaches particularly near Matemwe, Nungwi, and Kendwa.
