Natal City Overview
Natal is the state capital and largest city of Rio Grande do Norte, lying in Northeastern Brazil, on the Atlantic coast. Natal was originally founded by Portuguese at the mouth of the Potengi River in 1597 and derives its name from the Portuguese word, which means “Christmas”. Natal is a major commercial centre for the state as well as one of the top tourist destinations in Brazil. Natal and the surrounding region are really famous for its beautiful beaches, dunes and fantastic scenery. Visitors to Natal have an opportunity to explore the Ecological Sanctuary, visit the Bay of Dolphins, take a camel ride over some of the highest sand dunes at Pipa, or simply enjoy sunset at the Formosa Bay Lighthouse. Every December, Natal also hosts Carnatal, which is one of the largest off-seasons carnivals in Brazil. From the miles of white sandy beaches along Natal’s coastline to spectacular tourist attractions and exciting events, Natal has something for everyone. Natal has been chosen as one of 12 cities to host games of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which take place in Brazil. Several 2014 FIFA World Cup matches will be held at the Stadium of the Dunes, which design was inspired by the sand dunes that dominate the city of Natal.
