Macau City Overview
Macau, also known as Macao, is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China, along with Hong Kong. Macau is located on the southeastern coast of China, on the western side of the Pearl River estuary, and consists of the Macao Peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Cologne. A rich commercial and industrialized city of Macau is situated approximately 60 km (37 mi) west of Hong Kong, and 145 km (90 mi) southwest of Guangzhou. Because of its geographic position and excellent inland port, Macau had been an important trade center between China and Europe in the 18th century. Macau, Hong Kong's sister SAR and former Portuguese colony, possesses historical and cultural heritage that reflect a blend of Chinese and Portuguese architectures. Macau's heritage is founded on the historic center of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes several fortresses, an ancient palace, historic buildings and churches, monuments and friendly urban squares. Macau's attractions include the Senado Square, the Grand Prix Museum, Kun Iam Temple, A-Ma Temple, Lin Fung Temple, Lou Lim Iok Garden, the Maritime Museum of Macau, the Macau Tower, the Macau Wine Museum, the Monte Fort, the St. Domingo's Church, Sun Yat-Sen Park, the Camoes Garden and Grotto. With its main tourism and gambling industries, Macau is a fascinating travel and leisure destination in Asia, attracting millions of visitors each year.
