Across the industry, you'll also hear dead leg flights, repositioning flights, or deadhead charter flights.

Plenty of what gets advertised under that name is something else. On a true empty leg, you pay only for the segment the aircraft was flying anyway, with no positioning added. A discounted one-way charter also bills you for flying the jet to your departure airport, sometimes onward to its next booking too.

One-ways cover far more routes and still undercut a round trip, by a smaller margin. Which of the two are you being quoted? Ask before you compare prices.

How Empty Leg Flight Prices Are Set

Because the aircraft is already scheduled to reposition, operators may offer empty leg flights at significantly reduced rates to recover a portion of their operating expenses, including fuel, crew, and landing fees. Pricing is influenced by several factors, including aircraft size, flight distance, departure timing, route availability, and seasonal demand. As departure approaches, operators may become more flexible on pricing, particularly when an aircraft remains unbooked.

Aircraft size. Our aircraft directory lists turboprops at $2,300 to $3,500 an hour against $12,000 to $17,000 for ultra-long-range jets. Leg prices follow the same spread.

Distance, since a longer leg burns more fuel and crew duty time.

Lead time. Unsold legs may become less expensive as departure approaches. Within 24 hours of departure, an operator needing to reposition an aircraft may be willing to accept a significantly reduced offer, creating a last-minute discounted opportunity.

How far your dates can flex. A one-day move can turn up a leg that didn't exist on your first choice.

The airports at each end. Busy corridors such as New York to South Florida or Dallas to Houston carry several legs at a time, so competing operators pull prices down.

Season, because peak demand in one direction leaves surplus aircraft heading the other way.

Lead time and competition along popular routes also influence your ability to negotiate. An empty leg that remains unsold a day or two before departure, particularly on a route with multiple available aircraft, provides greater negotiating flexibility than a flight listed weeks in advance.

The medians below come from 6,494 empty legs that charter operators published with a price between July 31 and October 18, 2026. Empty Leg List recorded the listings, which The Flying Engineer grouped by aircraft type. Every figure is the operator's price for the whole aircraft, one way.

That $1,412 price in the ultra-long-range row belonged to a Global 5000 hopping from Regina to Seattle, a jet built for intercontinental range. These lowest advertised prices are exceptional cases and should not be used as a basis for estimating typical charter costs. Hops that short also pull every median down, so plan on an ocean crossing in a large-cabin jet costing more than its row suggests.

Where you look decides what you see, because each of the three channels selling empty legs covers a different slice of the market.

Through a Charter Broker

In the same dataset, about two-thirds of published legs carried no price at all, only an invitation to ask for one. Brokers put that question to many operators at once. VistaJet sells empty legs from its own fleet through its app. Flexjet's sister company PrivateFly posts legs on its website. One company's feed covers only the aircraft it controls or contracts, which on any single route can mean one option or none.

Online Marketplaces

Aggregators such as SkyAccess and Empty Leg List pull operator listings into one search. Empty Leg List will also email you when a leg appears on a route you follow. Since some listings show only a starting figure, confirm the total and the operating carrier's name before you pay.

The Risks of Booking an Empty Leg Flight

Another client's schedule drives every empty leg, so when that client's plans change, yours change with them.

1. Cancellation. Empty leg flights are dependent on the original charter itinerary. If the primary passenger changes or cancels their trip, the associated empty leg flight may also be modified or canceled, sometimes with very little notice. Travelers should consider having an alternative travel plan, particularly when attending time-sensitive events or business meetings.Of the empty leg flights listed between July and October 2026, 46.5% were removed before their scheduled departure dates. Empty Leg Flights in Europe and Other International Routes

Across the Atlantic, Europe runs a busy market of its own. London's business airports (Farnborough, Luton, Biggin Hill) lead it, with Nice, Paris and Belgian fields such as Antwerp and Wevelgem close behind. Summer brings the most legs. European legs went up a median of 3 days before departure in 2026 listings, so plan on deciding within the week.

Fewer legs cross an ocean than stay inside one country. Because international repositioning flights offer fewer opportunities to secure additional passengers, operators may provide smaller discounts.

Cabotage rules draw a harder line around international legs. With few exceptions, a foreign charter aircraft can't sell a flight between two points inside another country. A European operator's jet can't fly you from New York to Miami. Nor can a US operator sell you Paris to Nice.
