The McDonnell Douglas MD-900 Explorer is a light twin-engine eight-seat helicopter produced by MD Helicopters, Inc., based in Mesa, Arizona. Introduced in December 1994, the MD-900 Explorer is the initial production model, which has been built largely from composite materials and is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW207A turboshaft engines. The MD-900 Explorer is fitted with the NOTAR yaw control system, five-bladed bearingless main rotor, digital avionics including FADEC, diagnostics and an Integrated Instrument Display System (IIDS). The MD 900 Explorer is able to satisfy a wide range of mission requirements demanded from a light utility helicopter, including passengers/VIP transportation, emergency medical services, law enforcement missions, and offshore transportation.
