Private Jet to Pau - Airports, Routes & Prices
The city of Pau, in southwestern France, lies on the northern edge of the Pyrénées. Its famous for its wonderful mountain views, architecture, and green spaces. Pau is the word for stockade in Béarnese, the regional language used until the Revolution, and refers to the stockade around the original 12th-century fortress. This attractive city of around 76,000 people grew up around this historic castle.
Pau. capital of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques département, is the fifth largest city in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It lies 118 miles from Bordeaux, the region’s capital and largest city, and just 21 miles from the Spanish border. The city is divided by the Gave de Pau river, which originates in the Pyrenées.
Pau has thriving petrochemical and aerospace industries, and a large student population thanks to the University of Pau and the Pays de l’Ardour. Tourists love the city’s mild, temperate climate. July and August are usually the driest, warmest months, while June and July are the sunniest. The Tour de France is a draw, too; Pau has hosted 65 stage starts and 62 stage finishes.
The castle that gave Pau its name still sits above the river, but little of the 12th century building remains. Centuries of royal residents and visitors extended and transformed. By the time Henri IV of France was born there, it had become a Renaissance royal palace, ‘Chateau de Pau’. It now houses a national museum and one of France’s largest tapestry collections.
The Boulevard des Pyrénées, over 1 mile long, was a royal promenade created for Napoleon to link the castle to the Royal Square. It’s lined with lovely parks and the city’s most impressive buildings. Its famous spectacular vista of the mountains and valley is thanks to Napoleon—who ordered demolition of the wall in the Royal Square to achieve it!
Other attractions include:
- the funicular railway between Boulevard des Pyrénées and the lower town
- the birthplace of Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who reigned Sweden as Charles XIV John, now a museum
- the narrow, historic streets around the castle, with 16th-19th century buildings
- museums, including the Fine Arts Museum with works by Rubens and Degas, and the Museum of the Resistance and Deportation
- the Pau-Gelos National Stud Farm, created in 1808 by Napoleon, with its thoroughbreds and carriage collection
- the many parks, with exotic and rare species, including Beaumont Park at the end of the Boulevard des Pyrénées.
Outdoors, visitors can enjoy a round on the first golf course created in Europe, or try rafting, canyoning, caving, mountain biking, bungee jumping, hiking, or winter sports.
