Pilatus Aircraft Ltd. is a Swiss aircraft manufacturer headquartered in Stans, Switzerland. Although the company is smaller than the industry's giants, Pilatus has nearly a century of experience and is one of the most respected names in aviation.

History

Founded in 1939, Pilatus's first major project was assembling reconnaissance biplane aircraft from spare parts. The company's first design was designated the P-1, but would ultimately be abandoned. It wasn't until 1941 that Pilatus began working on what would be their first completed design project, the SB-2 Pelican, which would take its first flight in 1944. In 1942, the company won an important contract with the Swiss government, facilitating its growth and enabling the fruition of additional design projects. Although the P-1 was never built, the P-2 first flew in 1945 and was briefly used by the Swiss Air Force. Although the P-3 won the company's first export order, the P-4 was only built once and the P-5 was never built at all. Fortunately, the PC-6 Porter, which first flew in 1959, was the company's first aircraft to achieve a high level of global success. Through nearly 30 years of additional prototype development, it wasn't until 1991 that Pilatus would receive another top seller in the form of the Pilatus PC-12, a versatile turboprop transport aircraft. Several derivatives of the PC-12 have been developed since then, both for military and civilian use. Learn more about Pilatus on Wikipedia.

Today

Today Pilatus continues to diligently produce the world's supply of PC-6 and PC-12 aircraft, its two most iconic and successful models. The PC-12 in particular has sold over 1,200 units and is commonly used for executive transport, freight transportation, emergency medical services, and government missions. Its popularity is no doubt due to its well-balanced design, offering speed, range, low operating costs, and a relatively large cabin. The PC-12 has been a forerunner in the industry for over two decades and will likely continue to be a top seller for years to come.
