With a certified top speed of Mach 0.95, about 627 mph at cruising altitude, the Bombardier Global 8000 holds the title of fastest corporate jet in service today. Transport Canada approved it on November 5, 2025, and the jet received FAA certification on December 19, 2025, with European approval following in January 2026.

Bombardier built it on a high-speed wing carried over from the Global 7500, then re-tuned the engines and ran a 2021 test campaign that flew a Global 7500 test aircraft past the speed of sound to justify a higher certified limit.

In This Guide, You'll Learn

  • Why Bombardier had to fly faster than sound to certify a jet that never does in service.
  • How much time Mach 0.92 cruise saves on  transatlantic flights and where those savings diminish.
  • Which Gulfstream aircraft still offers approximately  200 nautical miles more range.
  • Why many websites report the Global 8000's  speed incorrectly in mph.
  • How the Global 7500 can be upgraded to Global 8000 speeds and whether the newer aircraft is available for charter today.

Global 8000 Top Speed and Cruise Speeds

Four published speeds cover the jet's envelope, from a typical cruise of Mach 0.85 up to the Mach 0.95 limit. Published rankings of corporate jet speed use the top figure, but crews don't hold it for hours, and on a long flight your arrival time depends on Mach 0.92, a setting Bombardier calls ultra-high-speed cruise and bills as the first of its kind for transcontinental trips.

At the NBAA convention in Las Vegas in October 2025, three weeks before Canadian certification, Bombardier raised the limit from Mach 0.94 to 0.95. Older articles still quote the lower number.

What Makes the Global 8000 Faster Than Other Private Jets?

With the same wing, the Global 7500 topped out at Mach 0.925, below Gulfstream's 0.935. The wing gave Bombardier a fast platform to start from, and two later steps lifted the 8000 to Mach 0.95, making it the fastest corporate jet in production by 0.015 Mach over the G700 and G800.

  1. A wing built for high Mach numbers. Bombardier’s Smooth Flĕx Wing uses a swept, high-speed profile to hold drag down near the speed of sound, where drag climbs steeply on conventional wings, and leading-edge slats to keep the jet controllable at the low speeds of a landing. That slow-speed control counts at airports with unusually steep glide paths, and in September 2026 the Global 8000 received clearance for London City Airport. Until then, London-bound jets of this size had to use Farnborough or Luton.
  2. Engines re-tuned for the new model. The Global 7500 and 8000 share GE's Passport 20 turbofan, rated near 19,000 lb of thrust. For the 8000, the engine was modified and its control software updated. Better fuel burn per pound of thrust lets the jet fly 300 nm farther than the Global 7500, and the software changes supported the higher top speed.
  3. A dive past Mach 1. Certification rules set a jet's maximum operating speed safely below the highest speed it has proven in flight test, which meant Bombardier had to go supersonic to certify a subsonic limit. In May 2021, a Global 7500 test aircraft in Global 8000 configuration passed Mach 1.015 several times over California with a NASA F/A-18 flying chase, and Bombardier says it was the first transport-category aircraft to fly supersonic on sustainable aviation fuel.

Gulfstream's fastest published cruise is Mach 0.90, so the Global 8000's cruise advantage of 0.02 Mach runs wider than its 0.015 lead in top speed. On distance, the G800 wins outright, with 8,200 nm at Mach 0.85 against the Global 8000's 8,000.

Bombardier Global 8000 Flight Time on Real Routes

On a 3,000 nm transatlantic leg in still air, flight time on the Bombardier Global 8000 comes out about 28 minutes shorter at Mach 0.92 than at the Mach 0.85 long-range cruise Bombardier and Gulfstream both publish. Winds, routing and air traffic change the real number, sometimes by more than the speed difference itself.

A July 2026 record flight put the Global 8000 on the ground in Farnborough, England, 8 hours 46 minutes after it left Los Angeles. The crew reached Mach 0.93 at peak against unfavorable winds and beat the previous city-pair record by 2.2%.

Global 8000 Range at High-Speed and Long-Range Cruise

At its Mach 0.85 typical cruise, the Bombardier Global 8000 has a range of 8,000 nm, enough for the showcase routes Bombardier lists, such as Dubai to Houston, Singapore to Los Angeles and London to Perth. Speed costs fuel, and at Mach 0.92 the range drops to about 4,200 nm.

New York to London (about 3,000 nm) and a US coast-to-coast trip (about 2,100 nm) both fit inside that shorter window with room to spare. Los Angeles to Farnborough, at roughly 4,700 nm, doesn't, so on a leg like the record flight the jet has to spend part of the trip at a slower setting to make the distance nonstop.

Global 8000 Cabin Features for Long Flights

Four living spaces and a dedicated crew rest give the cabin room for long sectors, and it's pressurized closer to ground level than any other business jet in production, which Bombardier says helps passengers arrive less tired.

Cabin altitude of 2,691 ft at 41,000 ft, down from the 2,900 ft Bombardier promised at launch and below the 2,840 ft Gulfstream quotes for the G700 and G800

Can You Charter a Bombardier Global 8000?

You can, though few are offered for charter so far. Early deliveries went to private owners and to NetJets for its fractional program, and Vista is converting its existing Global 7500 fleet. Global Jet in Luxembourg added one to its charter fleet in January 2026 and offers it for charter flights.

Every private jet charter we arrange flies with an FAA Part 135 operator or its foreign equivalent, and Paramount Business Jets works as your agent without owning or operating aircraft. Availability of any particular type on your dates comes down to which operators fly it and where their jets are that week.

If the fastest corporate jet isn't available when you need it, the Global 7500 makes a sensible stand-in. Its cabin has the same dimensions, its 200-plus deliveries make it far easier to find for charter, and on a transatlantic leg the difference in cruise speed costs only minutes.

Send us your route, dates and passenger count, and we'll come back with the ultra-long-range jets operators can offer for that trip. You can get an instant private jet quote online or call us at +1-877-727-2538 ext. 1.

FAQ

What is the fastest private jet in the world?

At Mach 0.95, nothing in private aviation outruns the Bombardier Global 8000, and no supersonic business jet exists to challenge it. Aerion, the company that spent years designing the AS2 supersonic business jet, shut down in 2021 before a prototype flew. Boom Supersonic's Overture is an airliner design, so it won't compete with private jets either.

How fast is the Global 8000 in mph?

Around 627 mph, or 1,009 km/h, at its Mach 0.95 limit at cruising altitude. Sites quoting roughly 720 mph convert Mach at sea level, where warmer air carries sound faster, and land on a figure the jet never reaches in normal flight.

Is the Global 8000 supersonic?

It isn't supersonic in service, with a certified limit of Mach 0.95. Even a faster design would hit a legal wall over American soil, where federal rule 14 CFR 91.817 bars civil aircraft from exceeding Mach 1 without special FAA authorization.

Are private jets faster than commercial jets?

Usually, yes, with airliners cruising at about 515 to 570 mph and large private jets such as the Global 8000, G700 and G800 reaching roughly 595 to 610 mph at their fastest cruise settings. Smaller private jets cruise at or below airliner speeds.

What is the fastest commercial airliner?

Concorde still holds the record for passenger service, flying at up to Mach 2.04 until its final flights in 2003. Among airliners flying today, the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental is the quickest, with a typical cruise of Mach 0.855, about the same as a long-range business jet's normal cruise.

Can a Global 7500 be upgraded to Global 8000 performance?

Owners can, through a service bulletin carried out at Bombardier service centers. Both jets share the BD-700-2A12 type certificate and identical outside dimensions, so the work is a modification and calibration job on the existing airframe. The first conversion, for a private Australian owner, was finished at Bombardier's London Biggin Hill facility in early 2026, and Bombardier's upgrade announcement explains what the modification covers.
