The castles, canals, and bridges of Bruges – often called the “Venice of the North” -- make it one of the most visited and photographed cities in Europe. Located in the tiny country of Belgium, which is bordered by France, Germany, and the Netherlands, Bruges is famous for its beer, chocolate, mussels and twice-fried Flemish fries. And, when done eating in this city that was chartered in the 12th century, it’s time to shop for diamonds or, at least, watch the stone cutters in the Diamond Museum. Bruges is Europe’s oldest diamond center. Bruges has many other tourist attractions, including Burg Square, which is the city center; the Markt, which has been a market and meeting place since the 1st century; Belfort or the Belfry of Bruges, a 270-foot bell tower that has 366 winding steps to an amazing panoramic view of the city; the Basilica of the Holy Blood, a 12th century chapel that houses a vial that is believed to contain a cloth stained with Christ’s blood; and the Salvador Dali Exhibition, which contains a collection of the artist’s works. The best way to see the city, its Medieval architecture, its dozens of castles and many of its more than 80 bridges – from which “Bruges” got its name -- is by boat, on a canal tour. Bruges was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Centres in 2000. An annual religious procession, the Procession of the Holy Blood, which is held 40 days after Easter on Ascension Day and draws tens of thousands of people, is also on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
