Millionaires, golf courses and sunshine abound in Naples, a city on Florida’s southwest Gulf Coast that takes its name from the Italian birthplace of pizza.
And those things make Naples Airport one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country, especially in the winter when northerners are looking to get out of the cold. Naples is a city-owned and run airport.

While there is often a lot of air traffic, including many chartered private jets into Naples Airport, it doesn’t seem to cause the airport – or its two fixed base operators – any trouble. Online reviews for Naples Airport, the “Gateway to the Paradise Coast,” are overwhelmingly positive and gushing with praise. The fixed base operators got thanked for everything from providing a free car so travelers could grab lunch to making travelers feel like a member of the family.
Private jet charter flights from Naples are often headed to Key West or the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area.
Naples Airport, which has not had commercial service since 2003, changed its name from Naples Municipal Airport in 2018.

Money and golf in Naples
Naples and nearby Marco Island are among the richest areas on the Gulf of Mexico.
Home to thousands of millionaires and five of the richest people on the planet, according to Forbes, Naples and Collier County have some 80 championship golf courses that host state, national and professional tournaments. There are more golf holes per capita in Naples than in just about any other part of the world.
Golfers and retirees hire private jets to KAPF to enjoy the weather, the shopping, the proximity to the Everglades and, of course, the beautiful beaches. Naples is sunny year-round with delightfully warm temperatures even in the winter.
Unlike many coastal cities in which high-rise condos line the beach, most of Naples Gulf Coast is lined with private mansions selling for as much as $80 million.
Naples golf courses range from public courses to its championship courses, including Tiburón Golf Club, home of the LPGA CME Group Tour Championship in November.

The historic Naples Pier, which juts out into the Gulf of Mexico, is a favorite tourist destination as is the white sand of Vanderbilt Beach. Although the beach does get crowded sometimes, it is still more secluded and surrounded by nature than beaches to its north.
Renting a private jet to Naples Airport is also a great way to get to some great fishing spots or a spot to land for a short drive to explore the Florida Everglades.
The city’s mild climate and abundance of fish reminded early settlers of Naples, Italy, for which it was named in the late 1800s.
Many Naples golf courses have famous designers, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicholas, Greg Norman and Robert Trent Jones.
TPC Treviso Bay, Tiburon Golf Club and Pelican’s Nest Golf Club, in nearby Bonita Springs are popular among golfers in Naples which calls itself the “Capital of Golf.”
Flamingo Island at Lely Resort Golf and Country Club is a favorite of modern-day long hitters. It’s a par 72 that stretches to 7,171 yards from the back tees.
Starting in the middle of January and running to May, when temperatures get really hot, there are few better places to golf than Naples.

Naples Airport, which is located within minutes of downtown Naples, has convenient access to major roads, including Interstate 75.
It services more than 100,000 aircraft operations a year. The airport breaks down the operations like this:
- 65 percent: transient general aviation
- 21 percent: local general aviation
- 14 percent: air taxi
- Less than 1 percent: military and commercial
Naples Airport is home to flight schools, air charter operators and corporate aviation and non-aviation businesses. It is also the home of public use aircraft for fire and rescue and mosquito control.
Among the things people are saying about Naples Airport in online reviews are:
- “It amazes me how well the line and FBO staff are able to orchestrate the multiple arrivals and departures. The desk staff is always friendly and willing to help, despite the volume of traffic.”
- “The Naples Airport Authority is one of the most accommodating, professional, and well-managed FBO locations that we use.”
- “They have made me feel like a part of their family, while continuing to provide 1st Class Service, to not only the flight crew but also the aircraft owner and passengers.”
- “Self-serve gas was just about the cheapest that I have encountered at a busy airport.”
- “There are three rental car counters conveniently located in the FBO.”
- “This facility run buy a local government is fantastic.”
- “FBO will let you use crew car for 1.5 hours. Several cars available, and the vehicles are late model and well maintained.”
The future of Naples Airport
Naples is in the process of preparing a new master plan for the airport.
It is holding public hearings in 2019 to hear suggestions and ideas from stakeholders and the general public. The last time the master plan was updated was in 1997 and many things have changed since then, including the end of commercial airline service to Naples.
The primary goal of the master plan study, the airport authority said, is to “create a 20-year development program to maintain a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly airport facility for the Naples community.
“By achieving this goal, the document provides the guidance to satisfy the aviation demand in a financially feasible and responsible manner, while at the same time addressing the aviation, environmental, and socioeconomic issues of the community.”
