East meets West and ancient meets modern in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. The second largest city in Turkey after Istanbul, Ankara is culturally and historically rich. The city, like the country of Turkey, is an interesting mixture of European and Middle Eastern cultures and influences. This intersection of cultures is evident in the food, nightlife, and fashions of Ankara. The seat of government and diplomacy as well as home to the State Opera and Ballet and the Presidential Symphony Orchestra, Ankara has more than a dozen universities. The large student population keeps the ancient city young and vibrant. Overlooking Ankara is Anıtkabir, a giant hillside mausoleum in which Kemal Atatürk, modern Turkey’s first president and the person who declared Ankara the capital in 1923, is entombed. To visit the ancient side of Ankara, go to Ulus, where the historical sites include the Ankara Castle, the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and the city’s oldest hotel. Or, experience the tradition of a Turkish bath, a hamam. Bathe yourself or let an attendant do it in one of the city’s many spas, including Tarihi Sengul Hamami, which was built in the 15th century and is still in use today. After an ancient bath, check out the cosmopolitan district of Kızılay, where you will find embassies, government offices, restaurants and a vibrant nightlife.

Finally, a fun fact about Ankara: it is where the Angora goat originated in the 14th century. The fleece of the Angora goat – Ankara used to be called Angora – provides mohair, the luxurious fiber used in sweaters and coats. Angora goats are often mistaken for a sheep because of their thick, curly coats. Turkey remains one of the world’s top producers of mohair.
