Marrakech City Overview
Marrakech (Marrakesh) is a city in southwestern Morocco, situated at the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. Marrakech was founded in 1062 as the capital of the Almoeravids, and has been an important cultural and trade center for centuries. One of Morocco's four Imperial Cities, along with Meknes, Fes, and Rabat, Marrakech offers its ancient atmosphere, unique charm and innumerable historical attractions. Marrakech is often referred as to the "Rose City" or the "Red City" for its original red clay color of the city's walls, alleys, and houses. Marrakech is filled with exotic sights, sounds, and smells, and is labyrinthine alleyways, secluded palaces, museums, mosques, and markets. Marrakech is divided into two districts: the historical old city, the Medina, and the modern exotic city, Gueliz, each one boasting its very own unique characteristics. The Medina was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Marrakech's popular attractions include the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, the El Badi Palace, the Dar M'Nebhi Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Saadian Tombs, the Djemaa el-Fna, the Dar Si Said Museum, the Majorelle Gardens and Museum of Islamic Art. Marrakech, the jewel of Morocco, offers visitors a great taste of Moroccan culture, rich history, and unique traditions. Marrakech is served by Marrakech-Menara International Airport, which is located 6 km (4 miles) southwest of Marrakech's city center.
