Private Jet to Harbour Island - Airports, Routes & Prices

Harbour Island, a tranquil mecca for the well-heeled and other vacationers seeking a remote beach retreat, belies its tumultuous history.

Its original inhabitants were the Lucayan Indians who were enslaved by the Spaniards in the 1500s and shipped to South America to work in gold and silver mines. Then, in the mid-1600s, English Puritans in search of religious freedom, landed on the adjacent island they would call Eleuthera, a derivation of ancient Greek meaning “freedom.” Eleuthera and Harbour Island are the easternmost of the 700 islands that comprise the Bahamas, a coral-based archipelago 200 miles east of Miami now under British rule.

The Puritans were finally safe from religious persecution but, they soon found out, not safe from marauding Spaniards who had easy access to the 110-mile long island. So, they established another settlement on Harbour Island, which was nearby, much smaller and much easier to defend.

The small colony on Harbour Island prospered by building ships that carried fruit, timber, sponges, sugar – and consequently rum, during Prohibition -- to the United States and Europe. Few visited the Bahamas until the 1940s when regular air flights began. Tourists started coming and Harbour Island grew. Its modern-day population is about 2,000. Dunmore Town, the only city on the island was named after Lord Dunmore, who, in the late 1700s, was the first governor of the Bahamas. It’s one of the oldest settlements in the Bahamas and has plenty of the island’s pink sand beach, colorful cottages, white picket fences and lush palm trees, bougainvillea and jasmine. Its sparkling turquoise waters are dotted with yachts and fishing boats.

Get around the island’s five square miles by golf cart, bike or horse and carriage. It’s on Eastern Standard Time and its dollars are equal to U.S. dollars.

By the way, wondering why the locals call it Briland? Say Harbour Island quickly over and over and you’ll see.

Things not to miss on Harbour Island:

  • Hill Steps: cut out by prisoners, with an underground tunnel.
  • Titus Hole: a cave that overlooks the harbor.
  • Locally caught lobster.
  • Snorkeling the coral reefs.
  • Diving along the Devil’s Backbone.
