Sometimes business, research or other matters necessitate travel to dangerous cities.

Grozny, Chechnya, located 932 miles southeast of Moscow, is one of those places. Unrest continues as the city rebuilds from the Chechen wars of the 1990s. Russia announced in 2009 that it had ended its attacks on Chechen separatists and the first international flight in 15 years took off from Grozny Airport.

However, sporadic violence continues. Most governments advise of non-essential travel.

It’s a shame because the oil-rich Chechnya is a beautiful place located in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, which are considered the border between Europe and Asia.

Most of its 1.2 million people are Muslims.

Its capital, Grozny, which lies on the Sunzha River, was all but destroyed during the Chechen Wars but it has been rebuilt into a mini Dubai with five-star hotels and beautiful mosques.

Crumbling buildings have been torn down and replaced in the city the United Nations in 2002 declared “the most destroyed city on Earth.”

The most impressive mosques in the city are the Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque and the Mosque of Sheikh Arsanov.

The Akhmad Kadyrov Mosque, officially known as the "Heart of Chechnya,” is the largest mosque in Russia. It is made decorated with white marble from the Turkish island of Marmara.

Other impressive sites in the city include:

• The National Museum of Chechnya, which has a lecture hall, exhibition hall, restoration workshop and laboratory and theater.
• The A.A. Kadyrov Sport Complex, a $280 million soccer stadium named in honor of Akhmed Kadyrov, who, then president of Chechnya, was killed in a bomb attack in 2004. Chechnyan rulers see it as a way of enticing the country’s growing passion for soccer and to change the image of the war-torn nation.
