The Arenas

Here's a little about the stadiums and the cities in which they are located:

Luzhniki Stadium - Moscow

Luzhniki Stadium

Moscow

The largest and most famous of Russia's soccer stadiums, Luzhniki Stadium was originally built in 1956. Even though it has been renovated, its classic Soviet facade and large statue of Lenin that greets you at the entrance give it the most historic feel of all the venues.

Saint Petersburg Stadium - Saint Petersburg

An amusement park on the approach to the stadium gives visitors a chance to go roller-coaster-riding before entering the stadium that looks like a space ship.

There are views of the Gulf of Finland from many places in the stadium, which took a decade to build.

Capacity: 67,000 seats

Ekaterinburg Arena - Yekaterinburg

Agreeing on how to renovate to preserve the existing facade of this stadium, which was originally built in 1957, made its renovation tricky. In the end it was decided that installing temporary stands would be the best way to make sure it had the 35,000 seats that FIFA requires.

Capacity: 35,000 seats
Constructed: 2017

Fist Stadium - Sochi

Fisht Stadium

Sochi

The sweeping roof architecture and the views of the Caucasus Mountains to the north and the Black Sea to the south makes this perhaps the most beautiful of all the arena locations.

Samara Arena - Samara

Samara Arena

Samara

The design of this arena is a tribute to the city's place in history as one of the main hubs of the Soviet space program. It has a glass dome, which will be lit at night. The city itself, located at the confluence of the Samara and Volga rivers, is worth a visit.

Volgograd - Volgograd Stadium

Volgograd

With an exterior designed to look like a basket, this new arena bears little resemblance to the classic Soviet appearance of the one that used to sit on this site, the Central Stadium.

Saransk - Mordovia Arena

Mordovia Arena

Saransk

Saransk, the smallest of the host cities, is in the Mordovia region that is known for its colorful arts and crafts, reflected in the exterior of the arena.

Rostov-on-Don

The roof of this stadium, which is located on the banks of the River Don, mimics the route the river takes. It also has great views of the city.

Kaliningrad

Located in the area between Poland and Lithuania, this unusual and impressive stadium is built on the undeveloped Oktyabrsky Island, east of the city.

Spartak Stadium - Moscow

Spartak Stadium

Moscow

Here, visitors are greeted not by Lenin but by a statue of the gladiator, Spartacus. It might be the best place for a selfie in all the arenas. The outer red and white shell of the stadium makes it appear massive but it was built for club football with stands near the field giving it a more intimate feel.

Kazan Arena - Kazan

Kazan Arena

Kazan

The outdoor attraction of this riverside stadium is a giant high definition screen that runs across the entire side of the building. It is believed to be the biggest in Europe and maybe even the world. The flags of the competing nations are expected to be emblazoned on it game days.

Nizhny Novgorod Stadium - Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod Stadium

Nizhny Novgorod

Located where the Volga and Oka rivers meet, this stadium is one of several located on a river. The semi-transparent facade supported by slim pillars makes this one of the most striking of the venues. But, its most interesting attraction might be its view of the 500-year-old Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin.
