Glencoe City Overview
Just over 20 miles north of Chicago, on the shores of Lake Michigan, lies the town of Glencoe, one of Chicago’s many North Shore suburbs that are among the wealthiest in the United States.
Glencoe, however, is exceptionally beautiful. With the lake to the east, and the 1,200-acre Cook County Forest Preserve to its south and west, the 3.8-square-mile town is truly tucked away. The preserve includes Skokie Lagoon on Glencoe’s west side and the Chicago Botanic Garden to the north. More than one million people visit the park’s 27 island gardens every year. The origins of the Botanic Garden, which also has a large collection of bonsai trees, go back to the Chicago Horticultural Society in the late 1800s.
Glencoe is also buffered by several golf clubs, including the Lake Shore Country Club, the public Glencoe Golf Club and the Skokie Country Club.
In addition to the luxurious golf courses and the sanctuary of the 385-acre Botanic Garden, Glencoe has a lively arts community with entertainment from Writers Theatre.
There are many landmarks and historically significant properties in Glencoe, including many elegant estates built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and other buildings and structures designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. In 2018, the most expensive house for sale in a Chicago suburb was the Hoover (vacuum) family’s estate in Glencoe. The 10,000-square-foot Tudor-style mansion, which was built in the 1920s on a 12.2-acre lot, sold for $10 million. Perhaps the most expensive home sold in Glencoe history was a $19.5 million lakefront property that was purchased in 2014 by Groupon founder, Eric Lefkofsky. The quaint downtown area is filled with Tudor-style buildings and one-of-a-kind boutiques.
The population of Glencoe is 9,000. The median household income is $194,000 and the median home price is just under $1 million. Many famous people have called Glencoe home, including Fred Savage, Gene Siskel, Harold Ramis, and author Scott Turow.
The town’s beauty hasn’t escaped the eyes of Hollywood, either. Scenes from both “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” and “Sixteen Candles” were filmed in Glencoe. The town’s train station is in scenes from “Flags of Our Fathers” and “She's Having a Baby.”
