Umm Al Qaiwain is the second smallest of the seven Emirates which form the United Arab Emirates, with an area of 300 square miles (777 sq. km.) Umm Al Qaiwain is situated on the coast of the Arabian Gulf, extending over a distance of 24 km, between Sharjah to the west and Ras Al-Khaimah to the east, and stretches inland to 32 km. Umm Al Qaiwain was formed in 1775 when Sheikh Majid Al Mualla established Umm Al Quwain as an independent sheikhdom. In addition to the capital city of the same name, which is situated on a deep creek one kilometer in width and five kilometers long, Umm Al Qaiwain has two major regions - Falaj Al Mualla, the agricultural part of the Emirate, located 50 km south east of Umm Al-Quwain, plus the Seneyah Island, a marine sanctuary with a total area of 90 sq. km., located 1 km away from Umm Al Qiwain city. Umm Al Quwain's local economy has been traditionally based on pearl diving, fishing and agriculture, most of which was based in what is now the capital.
