Rotterdam is a city in the Netherlands situated on the banks of the river Nieuwe Maas, 25 km (15 miles) inland from the North Sea. It is one of the world's largest ports and a major oil refinery, with extensive shipbuilding and petrochemical industries. The city's name is derived from a dam in the Rotte river. Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands after the capital Amsterdam, now also emerging as a tourist destination in its own right. Much of the city was destroyed during World War II, and only small parts of the old city remains.
