Air Taxi

An air taxi is an aircraft is governed by FAR (federal aviation regulations) Part 135 unlike its counterpart Commercial aviation which is governed by FAR part 121. An air taxi is a passenger or cargo aircraft, which operates on an as needed basis for hiring passengers. Places like Hawaii, Alaska, or the Bahamas are areas where air taxi companies are particularly popular.

Air taxi companies are similar to charter aircraft but tend to have more single and multi-engine reciprocating aircraft then turbine powered or jet engine powered aircraft but in more recent times very light aircraft have broken through into the air taxi industry. This is because they tend to fly short distances at lower altitudes with the need of carrying only a few passengers at a time. An air taxi flight will be relatively in expensive to an airline or charter plane ticket because air taxi tickets tend to be sold by time in the airplane rather then seats used. A family of four flying an air taxi from one island to another in Hawaii would tend to pay based on how long the flight was where as a with a charter or airline they would pay based on seats taken. Charter aircrafts tend to charge more a flat rate fee based on destination rather then time or seats. For example: a four person family flying a flight on a multi-engine reciprocating air taxi from Miami to Paradise Island in the Bahamas might cost 120$ per hour, on a charter flight there would most likely be a higher rate due to the cost of flying a bigger aircraft such a short distance, and an airline could cost in upwards of 600$ depending on season for four seats.

Air Taxi

In today’s world air taxies are becoming more popular due to the rising and falling cost of fuel. Since people aren’t flying airliners as much the prices have gone up and people are looking for cheaper ways of traveling. Trains, busses, car-pooling and ferries are becoming more popular but when the distance is to far air taxis reign supreme. This is why companies primarily specializing in charter or commercial flight have incorporated air taxis into their business to make sure they do not loose out on business or customers.
