There are many options for private jet fliers both in the US and internationally, from direct on demand charter to aircraft ownership. One popular option is Fractional Ownership. Companies like NetJets can be found with advertising all over the place, and with great ads, and a huge industry presence, this option can be very attractive. What is Fractional Ownership, and why should you consider it?

The first fractional ownership company to come on the scene was NetJets. According to their history, they were formed because while the convenience and flexibility of owning an aircraft made sense, the finances did not. Aircraft ownership is a very expensive option. Beyond the multi-million dollar cost of purchasing a jet, comes the multi-million dollar cost of owning a private jet. From crew and maintenance staff salaries, to hangar costs, and maintenance bills, not to mention the high hourly rate of flying your jet for hours a week, it adds up to be a very high cost option. NetJets was created for people who are considering aircraft ownership, giving them an option to pay many of these costs on an annual basis instead of locking themselves into aircraft ownership long term.

However, many charter customers have found that chartering aircraft on a case by case basis is actually more convenient, and more cost effective than aircraft ownership, or fractional ownership. Here is how it works. NetJets clients buy a share of an actual existing aircraft. You can start out with 1/16th of an aircraft, and work your way up from there. You have to start out with a 5 year commitment, but could get more if you want. There is a large upfront fee that you pay for this ownership, starting at about $200,000, based on the age and size of the aircraft you are buying. Therefore, the $200,000 would buy a 1/16th share of an older Citation Ultra. There is a monthly fee that covers maintenance and crew costs, and then there is an hourly charge that is applied to each trip. So while the hourly occupied rate of the aircraft sounds good, you must breakdown the entire cost to get the true hourly rate. When all this is added up, it comes to a cost about double the hourly rate of a standard charter.

While you do own a portion of an aircraft, you will probably never see or fly on that aircraft. You will be flying on an aircraft of the same make, or similar make in the same class. You will be guaranteed an aircraft if you give 10 hours advanced notice. The flight crew and aircraft will be high quality and will provide great, reliable customer service.

In contrast, charter customers that come to Paramount Business Jets pay only one price, the cost of a trip on a pay as you go basis. For 50 hours of flying, our clients would pay around $150,000 on a light jet with Paramount. And that is it, all in! Our clients receive top notch, Wyvern reviewed aircraft at an hourly rate discounted lower than the standard retail price. They will receive one-way and empty leg savings on trips when they apply and solutions for all trips no matter what the need. The aircraft are reviewed, and selected per the client’s needs and desires.

Whether on a budget for this trip, or looking to fly in the highest luxury on a premium jet, you will have thousands of aircraft to choose from. Every operator we work with must provide the utmost professional and high quality flying experience, because they don’t have you (or us!) locked in for the next 5 years!! And instead of 10 hours, you only need 4 hours to get an aircraft booked with us.

Fractional Ownership was created for customers that are strongly considering buying their own jet. It is at that point that someone would consider the high cost of fractional ownership. If you speak to jet charter customers, you will find that many of them have owned jets before. In the end, booking a jet on a trip by trip basis turns out to be a much more financially practical option for almost any situation. You will receive the same sort of outstanding customer service and aircraft availability but with outstanding savings and more choices. In the end if you have read this article and you are still considering fractional ownership, please call us and speak with one of our aviation consultants about fractional ownership leverage, or stay tuned to later postings, where we will address this up and coming option for private jet flight solutions!

As a savvy traveler, you must consider all of your options, and weigh them for each trip by your own set of priorities. Are you looking to go for less money, or the highest level of luxury, or something that splits the difference. One option available of course is to rent a private jet, and even among the wealthiest of travelers the choice to fly private is not a flippant decision. Often times in the media, we see jet setting portrayed as just tell someone to “have the jet ready”, but in the real world, is this how it works? Let’s break down renting a private jet and see what it takes and what the best methods are.

Each and every trip starts with point A to point B. Maybe there are more points than that, but the idea is, you are here, and you need to go there at some point. Now let’s ask ourselves some questions. Are we coming back? If so when? If your flight is a one way, point a to b flight, then a private jet one-way price may be a good option for you. You will need to be flexible on date, time and private jet size to get that one-way flight pricing, if not you will pay for a same day round trip price, which isn’t so bad if you aren’t looking for the best bargain. If you are looking to return home a few days later, then you fit right into the main bulk of private jet users, the round trip private jet flight option. But if you’re looking to stay for a week or two, you may be looking at the multiple round trip prices, which can be hefty.

You have planned your trip, you have the dates you want to fly, and you are certain you will fly private on this trip, or at least you want to get a good idea of the price, so you can make that final decision. There are several options before you as to who to contact, a broker, an operator, or a friend with a jet. If you don’t have the last, then you will be paying one of the other two for the flight. An operator is one of several types of companies that either own a private jet or fleet of jets, or they manage jets for the aircraft owners, chartering them out when they are not being used. If you live in a major hub like New York or LA, then you have a large number of operators to contact. If you live in Birmingham, Alabama, you may have only 2 or 3 options, and your aircraft choice is limited. An operator will be able to give you a quote on the aircraft in their fleet at a retail price, and if you are planning to fly out of their airport, you may be able to do fairly well. But if their aircraft is not available, you have to keep searching, and if it is available, how do you know you’re getting the best deal?

At the simplest point, a private jet charter broker is a professional that matches clients to the aircraft they need. But bottom line is there is, or should, be much more to your broker than that. Your broker should be as good as the sales staff, the dispatchers, and the pilots of the operator of the aircraft combined. Booking your trip goes so far beyond point A to B and finding the cheapest jet. What aircraft is right for your trip, and why? Are there any major issues, permits, customs problems with your trip that need to be dealt with ahead of time? If an operator has a fleet of 3 light jets, and two midsize jets, will they try to squeeze your group of 8 into that midsize for a 4 hour flight, even though your budget allows for a super mid? A broker will start off with looking at every angle to find the right fit of aircraft and price. Is there a transient aircraft in the area that would do this trip without minimums? Is there a nearby operator they know gives great pricing, discounting the positioning legs? Hand in hand with knowing the operators is aircraft selection. Your broker will be able to walk you through the steps of choosing the right aircraft for you trip. How many passengers do you have? How far are you traveling? What is your budget? You don’t want to pack to many people into the wrong size aircraft, making for an experience that was not worth the money you paid. A rule of thumb is that as motion picture plays for about 2 hours, that’s about how long people will sit in the same seat. If you are in the air for more than 2.5 hours, you might want to make sure there at least two more seats than passengers, so that your guests can move around a little.

Each trip is going to be a unique situation with a unique set of solutions. If you are using an operator, even one with a large fleet of jets, it does not mean they are used to out of the ordinary situation. A large jet operator isn’t used to short light jet flights. Or an operator in Houston may be focused on trips to Mexico, but not trips to Europe. If your broker has experience, then that means they have seen it all, and if they haven’t seen it yet, they won’t be flustered. They will help you through each situation with a cool head. So when you have figured out what sort of aircraft fits your trip, your broker can present you with three or four aircraft options to choose from. Get pictures, and the year of make of the aircraft and make sure your broker does a background check on the operator. Once you have picked your aircraft, you will make payment by a wire transfer or credit card (cc is always the more expensive option, so try to get things rolling at least a day or two before the flight so you can wire). Your broker will walk you through documents and passenger information you need to present, ordering catering, booking a car at your destination and any other concierge services you need to make your trip as special as it should be.

Renting a private jet can be a complicated and time consuming task, but it does not have to be. With the right team on your side, you will find that it can be a fun and rewarding. Many clients enjoy the planning process and enjoy being involved in the details of how to rent a private jet. What you do not want is to spend weeks of hassle and running around, only to end up paying too much for the wrong aircraft. You should feel like your money is well spent, and that you have made the right decisions and received the best price and value. When you land at your destination you should be looking forward to sending an email your broker, letting them know how great your trip was. Flying privately should be the great lead into every successful business trip or vacation. Have fun, and be successful!

There have been a number of articles published that talk of people showing up to an FBO and finding a jet heading their way, and getting on for just a few hundred, to a few thousand dollars. Though I am sure it has happened, I doubt it happens often. But we do see outstanding offers, like an east coast empty leg on a Gulfstream for $7000, or a Falcon 50EX for $5000. These are called “fire sales”. They happen within 24 hours of the flight date, when an aircraft owner has a planned trip, and needs his aircraft in position. At this point, he is willing to get whatever someone will pay to cover that expense. He is going to fly anyway, it’s already paid for, and he just wants to cover some of that cost. It’s a great find, and believe me, your broker’s heart started beating 3 times as fast when he saw the price. If you’re lucky you have an honest broker that did not double the price when he tried to sell it to you! If you have a Paramount broker, you got an honest price.

The private jet charter industry had undergone a number of changes in the last decade, from newer, faster aircraft, to dealing with one economic downturn after another. During the Holiday Season, one of the changes that have truly changed the face of this industry is the prevalence and preference for empty leg/one-way flights. At one time, the industry was dominated by round trips. When you booked a jet, you paid for the trip down and the trip back. If you stayed in Palm Beach longer than the operators “minimums” allowed, you had to pay for the two round trips.

Then in a brilliant marketing effort, operators and brokers began to capitalize on these empty return legs. Suddenly, trips cost half of what they used to. Passengers began to see that if they were smart and flexible with their travel, they could fly for a fraction of the traditional charter jet prices. Ten years later, and it is now the norm. Savvy travelers have come to expect flights to cost just the hourly rate for their one-way trip. Fringe clientele that could only afford to fly but once a year in the past, were now able to do a number of trips. However, as this new way of flying has taken hold, it has also spilled over, and created a buzz. There is confusion in terminology that is built on by a lot of industry talk, and more marketing. What is an empty leg? What is a one-way flight? How much do they really cost? When and where can you find them?

Although these terms are used synonymously in our industry, they really are two different things. A light jet traveling from the New York Area to the Miami Area is going to fly 2.5 hours. A light jet average hourly cost is about $2500 per hour, so by hourly rates this trip is $6250. If this aircraft was taking off out of HPN and landing in FLL to pick up its passengers, then there are no added landing fees, and unless the operator has a fuel surcharge, it stands to reason that this would be the price. This is an empty leg. Traveling from the point the aircraft originates to the point the aircraft is destined for, and paying only the hourly rate for that aircraft (plus tax and a commission for the hard working broker that hunted that down for you!!). As can be imagined, these empty leg flights are not so common that you can just pickup tomorrow afternoon and grab one going to wherever you may be going. They are a gem that can only be found with hard work and a lot of luck.

This brings us to the definition of a one-way flight. A one-way flight is simply when you don’t have to pay for the aircraft’s return home. This means you DO pay for the positioning leg from the aircraft home base, and any positioning on the other end to get to where they have their next flight. You DO pay for landing fees at your pickup airport, your destination airport, and sometimes the final destination of that aircraft. Sometimes, an operator will take a risk, or gamble and give a client a one-way price, believing they can sell the return. On these trips the operator often adds in a logical positioning leg, say from OPF up to PBI to make sure they can pick up another flight without losing money. They also add a little bit to cover the aircraft parking for a few days, just in case it takes some time to pickup that return trip. All said and done, the 6250 may have a total of an hour of positioning, ie ISP to TEB to pickup and then OPF to PBI for the next trip. Then add $500 per landing give or take a few hundred. A few overnight fees of $500 and now we are up to about $11000 for the one-way flight.

How does that differ from a same day round trip? A same day round trip will have 5 hours of flying at $12500, plus landing fees, and fuel surcharges will put the trip at an average of $15,000. So we see that the one-way is certainly a savings over the round trip, and the empty leg is certainly a great deal. The one-way can be tailored to come closer to the empty leg price, if the passenger is willing to be flexible and do some legwork. If the aircraft is originating in Morristown, and the client is closer to White Plains, then there will be a little bit of a drive to get there, but the payoff will be most likely a thousand dollars or so. You also need a broker that knows how to read an operators quote, and what to ask them to shed for the flight. If your broker is a novice, they will also most likely be a push over when the operator stands firm on their price. The other end of the spectrum is that the broker gets pushy with the operator, making them feel beat up, because they keep asking for a lower price, but with no logic behind their request. Paramount Business Jets sales staff is highly trained in this area, and very respected by operators as a solid, knowledgeable broker that won’t make pushy requests.

With this firm distinction between an empty leg, and a one-way price, we often have clients call in looking for something lower.

One-way/empty leg pricing does not occur all over the country, or all over the world. It happens on very distinct routes, almost like scheduled commercial flights. However, if you know these routes, you can often use them to help cut down the price of your out of the way destination. The normal routes are New York to South Florida and back, New York to LA and back, South Florida to LA and back, and a little less common are flights to Chicago, and other corporate jet hubs like Dallas, Phoenix, and Cleveland. There are also international one-ways, but they are almost exclusively limited to East Coast US to Western Europe. Inter Europe one-way/empty legs are a completely different market, and there is a strong flow of one-ways to and from Moscow, and the Arabian Peninsula. The information to take away from this is where does your destination lay in regards to these routings? Are you coming out of Pennsylvania to Sante Fe, NM? Then a New York to LA one-way will work well for you. If you are going to Seattle, you will need to pay that positioning leg down to LA. You simply have to consider how your flight lays out on the normal traffic routes of corporate jets. And with a little luck, a true empty will fit right in with your trip!

If you understand the terminology, you will better understand how to manage your flight, and look for these three types of cost saving trips. There are many operators that specialize in floating fleets and offer one-way pricing for every flight. If you are flying a normal route, you can expect to find the trip at cost, but don’t assume you will find a fire sale. Work with your broker, push hard if you feel there is a better deal to be had, but understand the costs, and have your broker discuss them with you.

With the innovations of technology, brokerage companies such as Paramount Business Jets are able to source aircraft with short notice like never before with exceptional variety and choice of aircraft. Aircraft options for private jet charters include executive turbo props, very light jets, light jets, midsize jets, large jets, jet airliners, turboprop airliners and helicopters. Some aircraft are even outfitted with staterooms, and/or showers, meeting spaces, spacious seating, Wi-Fi, laptop chargers, desks, fax machines, and satellite telephones. In addition to the right aircraft for the trip, a private jet charter service includes concierge services which can vary based on the member’s preferences. A cruise speed of 0.80 Mach, unrefueled range of 5,950 nautical miles and a seating capacity of up to 14, positions the Dassault Falcon as a premium choice for non-stop routes such as New York & Dubai, Paris & Singapore or LA and Rome.

Announced back in 2001, the Falcon 7X Trijet has quickly become a regular favorite for business jet charters and is especially popular with clients in the heavy jet market. As one of the most technologically advanced private jets on the market, the Falcon 7X was the world’s first fly-by-wire business jet, improving on many of the capabilities of its predecessors. Flying higher, farther and faster, the aircraft outperforms many similar aircraft in its class thanks to a complete redesign and new engines. A cruise speed of 0.80 Mach, unrefueled range of 5,950 nautical miles and a seating capacity of up to 14, positions the Dassault Falcon as a premium choice for non-stop routes such as New York & Dubai, Paris & Singapore or LA and Rome.

Although similar to the Falcon 900, the Falcon 7X has much to offer than simply a stretched fuselage and wings. From “double-digit” performance improvements to quieter interiors, roomier cabins and luxurious finishing, the Falcon 7X is a breath of fresh air for private jet travelers. 28 larger passenger windows, LED lighting and cabin enhancements provide occupants with a significantly better field of view and more natural illumination. Similarly, the 1,552 cubic foot cabin measures 6.2 feet in height, 7.8 feet in width and is 39.1 feet long. This ample space, additional 140 cubic feet of baggage storage and increased legroom make the Falcon 7X cabin the epitome of comfort.

The new design innovations on the aircraft’s interior are the result of a collaborative effort between Dassault and DesignworksUSA, a subsidiary of BMW group. Dassault worked closely with DesignworksUSA to introduce a range of design innovations in the new Falcon 7X cabin. Subtle curves, single arc carpets and ingenious lighting techniques, all help to visually stretch the cabin, creating better flow and connect the interior from front to back. The combination of new lighting, design innovations and fixtures help to convey an open, comfortable and elegantly styled cabin that also has many functional design improvements.

The Dassault Falcon 7X’s fighter jet prowess, advanced capabilities and passion for innovation puts the aircraft years ahead of its closest competitors. The aircraft’s agility and versatility allow it to be tailored to any private jet charter while providing unequaled performance both in the air and on the ground.

Paramount Business Jets CEO Richard Zaher states, “We are very excited to put in writing what has always been our company’s core principles. The Charter Operator’s Bill of Rights is only one of many steps taken by our company to ensure fair business practices, and the highest level of ethics adhered to between both the broker and the operator, all on behalf of the end users.”

Some of the highlights of the Bill include the acknowledgements of the Charter Operator’s commitment to excellent customer service, the time and resources invested into their operations, and the quality and experience of their staffs. Along with that comes the promise to continue the level of professionalism exhibited by Charter Brokers as well as a continued promise of fair dealings, relationship building, and of providing any assistance the operator may need.
