About Air Charter Service

An air charter is the business of renting an entire aircraft rather than individual aircraft seats. Unlike airlines or major air carriers that focus on selling transportation per seat, air charter operators specialize on renting individual private aircraft for luxury, business or corporate and/or urgent or time-sensitive freight, cargo and/or medical itineraries.

Air charters are also known as air taxis, executive charters, jet charters and are an important part of general aviation. In the United States all air charter companies and operators are governed by Part 135 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. Airlines and scheduled air carriers on the other hand are governed by the more stringent standards of Part 121 of the FARs, which are specifically designed for larger carriers.

Following the end of World War II, the surplus of available aircraft led to the growth of corporate aviation and related air taxi and air charter services. Booming air charter companies soon began chartering flights for corporations, executives, individual private travelers, medical flights, sports teams, and entertainers, etc.

Towards the end of the 1990s, aircraft charters became increasingly popular due to many factors. One major factor that greatly helped the growth of air charter companies was the use of the internet. Due to the fact that air charter companies were never a part of the major GDS or travel distribution systems, it could not reach wider audiences. With the introduction of internet communication, the distribution of information regarding the availability of aircraft, placement, and pricing became readily available to both brokers and potential customers around the world.

In addition, the growing popularity of air charters led to a general growth of brokerage businesses that were able to connect passengers with aircraft for charter both nationwide and worldwide. Where previously passengers were limited to a few local yellow pages listings, they could now access aircraft through brokers specializing in locating aircraft. Charter brokers were specialized in researching and finding aircraft to offer clients a wider selection of aircraft with potentially lower cost options including access to one-way charters.

Furthermore, the general public dissatisfaction with scheduled airlines also contributed to the growth of private charter aviation. Security issues, airport congestion and airline delays were deciding factors for many to stop flying commercially, and with the recent growth of air charter and charter brokerage companies, many people started exploring corporate aviation, fractional, jet cards or air charter services.
